Problem

The process of collecting data for research companies is usually very painstaking and time-consuming, a lot of them assign various agents to different locations to collect the data they need. These agents move from one location to the other using their paper and pen. In many cases, weather, transportation, and other factors get in the way of successfully collecting this data, and they end up losing parts of it. There was also the issue of validating the data collected as some agents collected the same data multiple times.

The goal of the product after various sessions with users is that we decided to build a solution that helps research companies (business owners and researchers) collect data effortlessly and also trust the data they've collected.

My Role

I was the Lead Product Designer for this platform, I worked alongside the Design Lead, my Product Manager, Engineering Lead, 3 Frontend Engineers, 1 Backend Engineer, 1 Quality Assurance expert.

Research

As a group, we fleshed out our UX research plan, which included a competitive audit and user interviews with usability testing. Our main research goals were to understand the form sharing process and identify the different types of users that might use the app and their pain points, goals, and needs. For example, how might we enable research companies deliver data/insights to their customers effeciently?

We conducted a total of 10 interviews with active users, consisting of researchers of all kinds(UX, data, etc), small business owners, and community leaders. After thorough feedback, we identified multiple ways in which Useforms will provide a better solution and user experience.

1. Ability to create and share forms easily.
2. More customisability and control to users.
3. Access to available data.
4. Reliability of data.
5. Convenience in the process of collecting data.

Wireframing

Once we were done with the research phase, I proceeded to creating our own low-fidelity concepts to generate as many unique ideas as possible and disregarded constraints to explore the most creative solutions. We also used this as an opportunity to visualise and decide on the most efficient user flows.

Visual Design

We presented our low-fidelity concepts in our first design review with our client and were able to confirm development feasibility and approval of each of our solutions. The designs below demonstrates the features I designed and presented in our final handoff client meeting. Each feature below was driven by research, user stories, client feedback, and user testing.

"David is a great designer - he is able to navigate effortlessly between product thinking and pixel-level attention to detail. Great communication skills and timely delivery. We had a very positive experience on a very challenging deliverable."

Learnings

1. Delivering value amidst tight deadlines - New timelines, resourcing issues, and reprioritisation meant the scope of the project was constantly changing. I had to adapt to those changes and still deliver the best design in time with tight deadlines.

2. Choosing what features to leave out - There were many great use cases we could tackle with a rich feature set. However, every single one was costly or unrealistic. I had to work with the Product Manager and Engineering Lead to determine what was feasible within the timeframe we had.
